Spring has officially sprung here at The House of Sugar Creek, and let me tell you — it’s a beautiful kind of chaos. From the first brave green shoots pushing up through the clay soil to the tiny flower buds hinting at the color to come, it feels like everything is waking up (including me). Today, I’m giving you a peek at what’s growing right now, what’s thriving, and a few little lessons I’m already learning this season.

What Spring Feels Like on the Farm
This is our first spring at the farm. We bought the property in the dead of summer (2024) and it was an overgrown mess. Half of the property was un-walkable (actually even un-crawlable if you can believe that! LOL). Until we had the clearing done, we didn’t really know what the land/terrain looked like. Happy to report, we’re extremely happy with our purchase. 😉
And being the first spring at the farm, it’s been amazing to see the trees wake up & bloom after attempting to thrive all clustered together. We have some truly magnificent oaks on our property.
In the fall, I decided on my garden planting area & tried my hand at fall/winter gardening. Not too shabby for my first time. And now, I’m in my first real spring season garden adventures and working diligently, as my time allows, to get everything planted out (that I started from seed at the end of January and into February).
Quick List of Things I'm Currently Growing
Considering I’ve dipped my toes into the flower farming bucket this year, I won’t bore you in this post with everything I’m growing. I’ll just quickly list what I’m most excited about: tomatoes (I have 33 plants & about 10-12 varieties), pumpkins (I think I have 8-10 varieties), sunflowers (2 varieties), zinnias (I think 4 or 5 varieties) and dahlias (a few different seed varieties & then about 30 different tuber varieties.
Farming Fails So Far
A few weeks ago, I got overly eager to get some of my seedlings planted out. We were in a busy period with Sugar Creek Event Rentals, a travel period & then weather. So my first big planting day, I got overzealous in how much I could plant out. And boy did that go sideways on me. I ended up sending my zinnias to an early death. Queue the tears. I direct sowed new seeds into the ground and then for shits & grins, I planted out the zinnia plants that appeared to still have green stems. And surprisingly, most of them had strong enough roots to take hold and start growing. I was shocked & giddy. So even though I had a huge setback, I learned to not be that eager to get things planted out.
Up Next in the Garden
I still have my potato slips to plant out and about 6 trays left of flowers to transplant. My Cosmos have been patiently waiting to pop out of their trays and into the ground. Several have already flowered inside my warehouse. I also need to add straw to all of my plants to help with the mulching efforts.
Spring Season Reflections
This season feels like so many hopes and dreams are finally coming true. This land was a hope for so many years. Ever since our 2019 land debacle, we’ve been on the hunt for the perfect piece for ourselves. We were vacationing in Colorado when we stumbled on this land and immediately asked for a tour when we got back, and the rest is history. Stay tuned for more dreams unfolding!!!
