My first draft of my garden plan is on paper! My flower farm is taking shape for the first steps in this journey. It took me a bit to get my garden plan figured out, but I think it’s solid. My next steps are to figure out if I’ve planted enough to actually fill these rows. I’ve got plant spacing written down, and I know how long my rows are…so I just need to figure out, based on spacing, if I need to plant more (or start more) & if I need to plant more/start more – do I have more to start.
One of my Cosmos varieties had like 10 seeds in the packet. My other one had a lot more, but is it enough?? I have no idea. And I have no plan of reference to anything or anyone who is a flower farmer (or a flower farmer starter). I see some flower farm “teachers” say to start with a few varieties and get good at them or only focus on them (and subsequently get good at them). And while I’m sure that is sound/logical advice – when have I ever done things “logical” right out of the gate. I’m a fail forward kind of gal. Heck – I don’t even have a water solution out there yet outside of a portable water tank.
And a portable water tank is not going to cut it for 14 rows of plants. And all the other things I’ll be planting out there (berry plants, etc). Our neighbors said we could tie into their well if we upgraded their well pump. We thought about trenching from our pond to their well and then trenching from our pond up to my garden. So the well feeds the pond and keeps it at the right level, year-round. And then using my pond water to water my garden. Okay – enough about my water woes — let’s dive into what my garden plan looks like and what I’ll be growing. If you want me to share specific varieties of anything I’m growing, just ask! For this post, it’ll just be easier to share the actual plan vs the varieties of what I’m growing. We’d be here all day if I shared all of the varieties in this blog post. Actually – I just remembered that I have a YouTube video that goes through everything I’m growing, including varieties.ย CLICK HEREย to watch it!ย

As you can see, I have some notes for quantities, but they aren’t hard and fast numbers. And I’ve planted more Cosmos since I wrote this – which is why I’m calling it a first draft. I really do need to figure out how many are going to fit per row. You can also see I’m companion planting to get everything in. And then on the last page – I’ve got some questions. Where are these things going. LOL I have no idea. And likely won’t know until I start planting.
Next steps for me – besides figuring out if I’ve planted enough of everything, is to get another load of cow compost trucked in and get it tilled into the garden. Plus I’ve got to take out my broccoli and collards, transplant my rosemary to somewhere until I figure out where it’s going to live & then do a lot of weeding around my garlic considering I can’t get my tractor in to till because the garlic is in the ground (all things I didn’t exactly think about when I was choosing where to plant the garlic. I wasn’t thinking about my 2025 plans back in the fall. Oops.
