GROWING IN TEXAS 8b.

My first ever garden as an adult was in 2007. I converted my dog run into a garden space (primarily to keep my dogs from eating my produce). I successfully grew tomatoes and peppers but not much else.

In August of 2024, we bought 11 acres of land. Before we even had our house pad site staked, I had my garden area picked out. We tilled up the land, incorporated cow compost and then created hilled rows with our tractor. My first garden on our land was a fall garden. I planted carrots, broccoli, collards & radish. I also planted fall flowers. I had success with the produce, but not much success with the flowers. I hand-watered that garden, spent so much time caring for it & was rewarded with a bounty that I was not expecting. Talk about pure joy!

Now I’m on a mission to keep gardening like my grandparents did, learn the skills they knew by heart (but my generation missed out on) and sharing the journey as I go. Ohhh…and building a barndominium house too!
