In between planting seasons, your garden soil need In between planting seasons, your garden soil need to be revived. 👇 Before I plant another seed, I’m giving my soil a refresh after everything it carried through whatever season it just finished. Because your plants pulled nutrients from your soil for MONTHS. You can’t just rip out the old plants, stick something in the same spot, and expect the soil to keep giving without putting something back. Since we’re stepping into fall, here’s what I’m doing for my fall soil refresh: 🌱 **Remove spent plants + roots** Especially anything diseased or heavily pest-damaged. I’m not leaving problems behind for the next season. 🌱 **Pull back the mulch and actually look at the soil** Is it compacted? Crusted over? Still holding moisture? Bone dry? Your soil will tell you a lot if you pay attention. 🌱 **Add compost** This is one of the easiest ways to replenish organic matter and feed the soil biology that helps make nutrients available to your plants. 🌱 **Amend based on what the soil actually needs** More fertilizer is not automatically better. If you haven’t tested your soil in a while, this is a great time to do it instead of blindly throwing amendments at your garden. 🌱 **Loosen compacted areas without destroying the whole soil structure** You don’t necessarily need to completely till everything under every time you change seasons. I choose to till once a year. 🌱 **Top it back off with mulch** Bare soil isn’t the goal. Mulch helps regulate moisture, protect the soil surface, suppress weeds, and keep that soil ecosystem working underneath. Your garden, no matter the season, doesn’t begin when you plant the crops. It begins when you prepare the soil they’re about to grow in. Give back to the dirt before you ask it to feed another garden. 🌱 P.S. Here’s your carrot bodyguard line-up ⤵️ 🌱Alliums Here’s your carrot bodyguard line-up ⤵️ 🌱Alliums (Onions, Chives, Leeks, Garlic) can mask the smell of carrots with their own strong scent & help deter the carrot rust fly. 🌱Rosemary can deter pests like slugs, snails & carrot flies. 🌱French Marigolds can deter pests like rust fly & aphids. 🌱Oregano can deter nematodes & rust flies. My goal for my carrots is to alternate an herb and a flower. We want to attract the beneficials in with the flowers and repel the bad pests with the herbs (scent). P.S. Don’t ever skip this step!! 👀 It’s called Hardeni Don’t ever skip this step!! 👀 It’s called Hardening Off. Specifically hardening off your seedlings. And there’s a process to it which needs to be followed so that you don’t send your seedlings to their death ☠️ I do about a week long process because once my seedlings graduate from my lights, they sit in front of a 14’ glass roll-up door in “east full” sun until noon when the sun is straight up over my building. Depending on where yours hang out after your lights, you may need to take a few more days to introduce them fully to the outside. Here’s my own schedule, feel free to see how your seedlings do and adjust accordingly. Day 1: outside in the shade for 1-2 hours, in an area where the wind is blocked, then back inside Day 2: 2-4 hours in partial shade, then back inside Day 3: 2-4 hours in partial sun, then back inside Day 4: 4-5 hours in more sun (I stick to the morning sun vs hard noon/afternoon sun on this day), the back inside Day 5: 6-8 hours of full sun, then back inside Day 6: 8-10 hours of full sun, then back inside Day 7: 10-12 hours of full sun, the place in a safe area for their first overnight (somewhere safe from night critters) Day 8: their first full day & night (if you have night critters, just be mindful of them!) Best practices: ➡️make sure your night time temps aren’t below 50 degrees F ➡️check the seedling soil moisture levels frequently once they are in the sun to make sure you’re not stressing them out further & letting them dry up in those first few days ➡️transplant into your garden at dusk - it’ll give your seedlings a chance for some recovery overnight before the sunshine shows up. Don’t forget to give them a good drink!!! P.S.
