Grab your notepad ๐Ÿ“ Seed starting is so much easi Grab your notepad ๐Ÿ“

Seed starting is so much easier than the internet makes it look, and most of the overwhelm comes from people telling you to buy a whole setup before youโ€™ve ever grown a single tomato from seed.

Red solo cups with holes poked in the bottom will grow you seedlings, and so will a $200 rack, so start with what youโ€™ve got.

Iโ€™m Type A and itโ€™s all or nothing for me, so trust me when I say Iโ€™ve tested what matters and whatโ€™s just pretty. These four you actually need:

1. Trays
2. Soil
3. Lights
4. Seeds (duh ๐Ÿ™„)

Trays let you bottom water, and if youโ€™re watering seedlings from the top youโ€™re making your life harder than it needs to be.

I use @bootstrapfarmer 1020s (in this video) with their 72-cell and 50-cell inserts.

Soil can be plain old dirt, I mean it. Dig up some backyard topsoil, pull the grass off first, and go. My bag of choice is @vermontcompost Fort Vee when Iโ€™m buying. Lately, Iโ€™ve been testing another formula using ProMix as the base because itโ€™s easier for me to source.

Lights are where Iโ€™ll argue with anyone who says a window is enough, because a window is where seedlings go to get leggy and floppy. Mine are @barrina_us LEDs from Amazon. I call them grow lights, theyโ€™re really just LEDs, and they do the job perfectly.

๐Ÿ“ŒSave this for spring! Basil is one of the hardes ๐Ÿ“ŒSave this for spring!

Basil is one of the hardest-working bodyguards in my garden, and most people plant it next to their tomatoes because a blog told them to, without ever knowing what itโ€™s actually doing over there.

The strong oils you smell when you brush past it are what does the work. A lot of pests find their dinner by scent, and a good patch of basil muddies that signal enough that your tomatoes get harder to find.

It wonโ€™t make your garden pest-free (nothing will, and anyone promising that is probably selling you something in a spray bottle), but it tips the odds in your favor, and in an organic garden thatโ€™s how we play the game.

I tuck my basil right at the base of the tomatoes, close enough that the scents overlap, and I add a flower nearby (French Marigolds) to pull in the good bugs that eat whatever still shows up. Every crop in my garden gets at least one herb and one flower working for it.

If youโ€™re done fighting your garden every season and ready to build one that actually works with you, comment SYSTEM and Iโ€™ll DM you the link.
