Your fall garden probably doesn’t need a total ove Your fall garden probably doesn’t need a total overhaul. It needs a **refresh.** Before you start throwing fall seeds into the ground, do this first: 🍂 Pull the summer plants that are truly done 🍂 Leave the tomatoes, peppers, herbs + flowers that are still producing (trim what needs trimming) 🍂 Remove diseased or heavily pest-infested plant material 🍂 Weed before those weeds go to seed 🍂 Check under leaves, around stems + at the soil line for pests and eggs 🍂 Top-dress tired soil with finished compost 🍂 Re-form rows or beds that have washed out or settled 🍂 Check your irrigation for leaks, clogs + dry spots 🍂 Keep the beneficial-insect habitat you already built 🍂 Add another round of bodyguard flowers + herbs where you have gaps 🍂 Decide what you’re direct sowing vs. transplanting 🍂 Check days to maturity and work backward from your first frost 🍂 Get pest cloth ready for brassicas and tender seedlings 🍂 Protect new seedlings from that lingering late-summer heat 🍂 Label everything and write down your planting dates And then? **Start scouting immediately.** Fall gardens still get pests. Fall seedlings still struggle in heat. And planting a new crop doesn’t mean you get to stop paying attention. This is exactly why I don’t completely tear my garden apart until hard winter sets in. I’m refreshing the space, replacing what’s finished and keeping the ecosystem I’ve spent months building working for me. Save this for your fall garden reset. 🍂 P.S. Your fall garden starts with the dirt. 👇 Before I Your fall garden starts with the dirt. 👇 Before I plant another seed, I’m giving my soil a refresh after everything it carried through spring and summer. Because your tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, peppers—all of it—pulled nutrients from that soil for MONTHS. You can’t just rip out the old plants, stick broccoli in the same spot, and expect the soil to keep giving without putting something back. Here’s what I’m doing during my fall soil refresh: 🌱 **Remove spent plants + roots** Especially anything diseased or heavily pest-damaged. I’m not leaving problems behind for the next season. 🌱 **Pull back the mulch and actually look at the soil** Is it compacted? Crusted over? Still holding moisture? Bone dry? Your soil will tell you a lot if you pay attention. 🌱 **Add compost** This is one of the easiest ways to replenish organic matter and feed the soil biology that helps make nutrients available to your plants. 🌱 **Amend based on what the soil actually needs** More fertilizer is not automatically better. If you haven’t tested your soil in a while, this is a great time to do it instead of blindly throwing amendments at your garden. 🌱 **Loosen compacted areas without destroying the whole soil structure** You don’t necessarily need to completely till everything under every time you change seasons. I choose to till once a year. 🌱 **Top it back off with mulch** Bare soil isn’t the goal. Mulch helps regulate moisture, protect the soil surface, suppress weeds, and keep that soil ecosystem working underneath. Your fall garden doesn’t begin when you plant the fall crops. It begins when you prepare the soil they’re about to grow in.
