We are nearly upon garlic harvesting season in the We are nearly upon garlic harvesting season in the South!!!

Here are my tips on when to harvest your garlic:

TIP 1: Harvest when you notice the lower leaves starting to turn yellow & then get brown & papery. At least the lower 3 leaves of your garlic need to be dead/shriveled up (or 50% of your lower garlic leaves are this way).

TIP 2: Gently dig around a test plant to see what the shoulders look like of the garlic bulb. Do you notice clove outlines that are separated like an actual clove or does it all still look like one gigantic piece of garlic (like you see at the grocery store)? If the former, itโ€™s ready to harvest. If the latter, leave it in the ground for another week & check for clove formation again.

TIP 3: Once youโ€™re ready to harvest, gently loosen the soil around and under the garlic bulb with some kind of garden fork or spade & scoop it up to the surface. Be careful not to bruise the garlic as it will affect its storage.

TIP 4: Cure/dry out for in a cool, dry spot w/ air flow for 3-5 weeks (until roots shrivel up and outer skin becomes papery). Once cured, snip the leaves off (leaving about 1/2โ€ - 1โ€ stem), trim up the roots, and dust off all dirt. Leave unwashed until youโ€™re ready to use. Can store 5-10 months depending on variety.

A quick note about hard neck varieties: once you notice the scapes pop up, cut them after they make their first curl/circle shape. This sends the plant energy back to the bulb and not to the flower. Donโ€™t toss away! Plenty of uses for garlic scapes!

Stay tuned for my own upcoming garlic harvests!!

I do stay in the #governerds loop. IYKYK
