I actually grow food like my grandparents did - organically which was just how they did things back then when the word “organic” wasn’t sensationalized. It was seed packet spacing rules, planting out after Easter & advice from the farmers almanac. 😉 I’ve modernized it a bit by choosing to companion plant (they were mainly monocroppers) around my main crops which helps keep my garden protected from garden pests. But just like them, I plant based on my frost dates & don’t use any harmful sprays for pest protection. 🍉Here’s your watermelon bodyguard line-up ⤵️ But 🍉Here’s your watermelon bodyguard line-up ⤵️ But first know that the main pests for watermelon are aphids & cucumber beetles. 🌱Alyssum controls aphids by bringing in the good bugs like lacewings & ladybugs who love a good aphid buffet. 🌱Catnip, dill, nasturtiums help deter aphids 🌱Radish, Nasturtiums, French Marigolds & Tansies deter cucumber beetles. 🌱Lavender, Borage, Oregano, French Marigolds help with bringing in the pollinators for watermelon. My goal for my watermelon is to alternate an herb and a flower. We want to attract the beneficials in with the flowers and repel the bad pests with the herbs (scent).
